Migrant Child Dies after Detention under Trump’s Hardline Immigration Policies | Physicians for Human Rights

Children Should Never Be Detained

A seven-year-old Guatemalan child died last week in U.S. custody, just hours after immigration authorities detained her and her father as they crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. Border Patrol agents said the girl had not had food or water for days. Held overnight in a small Border Patrol station, the girl went into seizures at dawn and died of extreme dehydration.

No child should be detained, and there is NO excuse for a child to die of dehydration while in U.S custody. Physicians for Human Rights believes that the hardline policies of the Trump administration are putting the lives of asylum seekers like this little girl at risk every day.

A young migrant girl, who should never have been placed in immigration detention, and who faced unimaginable conditions crossing into the United States, died last week. The seven-year-old Guatemalan child who had not had food or water for days, reportedly died of dehydration hours after being detained in a small U.S. Border Patrol station which at the time was processing at least 350 other asylum seekers – mostly families and children. Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) believes that the hardline policies implemented by the Trump administration are contributing to the dangerous conditions at the border which put asylum seekers’ lives at risk, daily. Please read our statement here and help remind the Trump administration that all U.S. policies and practices should aim to ensure protection of life, regardless of migratory status. At each of its borders, the U.S. government must uphold mandatory obligations to relieve imminent danger to lives and safety as a first priority.”
