Recently, migrant families separated by the Trump administration reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice that will aid in healing the profound harms caused by U.S. family separation policy.

Tell the Biden administration that you welcome this settlement, but there is more to be done.

With each day that goes by, the families that endured torture through this cruel policy continue to experience anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. We’re calling on the U.S. government to provide reparations for separated families, full legal representation, and protection against future separations.

Together, we can hold the U.S. government accountable and advocate for meaningful steps to address the suffering it has caused to thousands of families: Join our action today!

Provide relief for families torn apart
To President Joe Biden:

As documented by Physicians for Human Rights, the U.S. government's family separation policy amounted to torture of migrants and asylum seekers. You cited PHR's research during the presidential campaign to argue against this cruel policy. Now, it is time to bring this shameful chapter to a close and provide justice and restitution for the victims of this policy.

I’m asking that your agencies:

*Provide redress in the form of prompt, fair, and adequate monetary compensation for the physical and mental harm families suffered, for medical and rehabilitation expenses, for loss of earnings or earning potential, and as compensation for legal costs;
*Provide government-funded legal services and representation for families and children to understand their rights under this settlement and U.S. laws; and
*Ensure accountability by enforcing the terms of this settlement, including preventing future family separations.

These steps are necessary for those who have suffered serious psychological harm at the hands of the U.S. government, ensuring such separations never happen again. I hope you will take action immediately.

Sincerely,
