Justice for Separated Families
PHR’s newest report documents cases of the family separation policy that amount to torture and continue to inflict psychological trauma on the parents who were separated from their children.
Add your name to let the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security know that you want them to immediately reunite families that remain separated and to provide compensation to all affected families.
With each day that goes by, the families that endured torture through this cruel policy continue to experience anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. We can help end their suffering – add your name!
In cases documented by Physicians for Human Rights, the Trump-era family separation policy amounted to torture by the U.S. government on migrants and asylum seekers. President Biden cited our research during the presidential campaign to argue against this cruel policy. Now, it is time to bring this shameful chapter to a close and provide justice and restitution for the victims of this policy.
I’m asking that your department:
- Immediately reunify all families separated by the U.S. government;
- Work closely with Congress to ensure that families have a pathway to remain permanently in the United States with their children so they can experience safety and security;
- Provide redress in the form or prompt, fair, and adequate monetary compensation as damages for the physical and mental harm families suffered, for medical and rehabilitation expenses, for loss of earnings or earning potential, and as compensation for legal costs; and
- Fund rehabilitation for family members.
These steps are necessary for achieving justice for those who have suffered serious psychological harm at the hands of the U.S. government, and I hope you will take action immediately.
